BRICS Summit 2017: Xi Jinping urges nations to ‘speak with one voice’; read full text of his opening address

Five major emerging economies opened the BRICS summit on Monday to chart their future courses with Chinese President Xi Jinping inviting them to play a greater role in world affairs.

“We must make the international order more just and equitable,” he told leaders of Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa in his opening address. Xi said they should “speak with one voice” to jointly present their solutions to global problems and protect their common interests.

He also called on his BRICS partners to oppose a growing increase in protectionism around the world. Leaders hold their annual summit in Xiamen’s southeastern Chinese city on Tuesday.

Good afternoon! It is a great pleasure to have you all with us in the beautiful city of Xiamen, known as Egret Island. The BRICS summit will take place tomorrow. On behalf of the Chinese government and the people and people of Xiamen, and on my behalf, I welcome you to the Business Forum.

Xiamen has been a trading port since antiquity, as well as a gateway to the opening and foreign cooperation of China. Embracing the vast ocean, the city welcomed visitors from all over the world. On a personal note, Xiamen is the place where I started when I arrived in Fujian Province to resume a new position in 1985.

At that time, being one of the first special economic zones in China, the city was at the forefront of China’s reform and opening up and was in full swing.

Three years later, Xiamen became famous for its innovative and enterprising spirit, with new economic forms and new industries, trade and investment solid and easy access to the world with air, land and sea links. Today, Xiamen is a beautiful garden city with a perfect harmony between man and nature.

There is a popular saying here in South Fujian, “Dedicate yourself and you will win,” which embodies an entrepreneurial spirit. The success of Xiamen is a good example that demonstrates the perseverance of more than 1,300 million Chinese.

In nearly 40 years of reform and opening under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese have advanced without fear and determination, and we have successfully embarked on a path of socialism with distinctive Chinese characteristics.

We have encountered difficulties and challenges along the way. But we persevere and follow the rhythm of time. With dedication, courage and ingenuity, we make great progress in the pursuit of development in China today.

BRICS cooperation has reached a crucial stage of development. In evaluating their performance, it is important to take into account two things: the historical course of global development and the changing international panorama and the historical development process of the BRICS countries, both individually and collectively, in which BRICS cooperation is pursued.

We are in a great era of development, transformation and adjustment. Although conflicts and poverty continue to be eliminated in the world, the trend towards peace and development is increasing. Our world today is becoming increasingly multipolar; the economy has become globalized; there is a growing cultural diversity; and the company is digitized.

The law of the jungle which rejects the strong prey of weak play and zero sum, and peace, development and mutually winning cooperation have become the common aspiration of all peoples.

In this context, a large number of emerging and developing countries have become important, playing an increasingly important role in international affairs. BRICS cooperation is a natural choice for our five countries, as we all share a desire for peace and development. During the last decade, the BRICS countries have advanced and become a strong point in the global economy.

During the last decade, the BRICS countries have made progress in the search for common development. The sudden collapse of the global financial crisis of 2008 has left the emotion of the global economy, which has not yet fully recovered. Faced with the external shock, our five countries have maintained the ground by strengthening the national economy, stimulating growth and improving livelihoods.
